My opinion on Google Chrome OS and Cloud Computing

Google Chrome OS looks like a great OS for people who mainly use the Internet and online apps. I like how Chrome OS looks and feels like Chrome Web browser, so the user will not have to relearn a new OS. I hope that users can install Wine, VMware, Virtual box, Debian apps, and Windows Programs on it with Wine. Google Chrome OS looks very promising. It would be great if Google made a temp folder for storing things on the hard drive also since I think it would be horrible to be disconnected from the net, and not being able to work on homework because the file is only on Google Docs, and not on my PC which does not have Internet access. because I forgot to pay my ISP bill. I hope you do not need the internet to authenticate my login account. If I don’t have internet, I still like to login to my computer to access my files.

What I like about Cloud Computing Programs?

  • Does not use a lot of system resources.
  • No need to install and update additional programs on my PC.
  • No need to uninstall program from my computer if it is web-based
  • Don’t have to worry about system requirements as much since most cloud apps uses Flash, Java, or Javascrpt which is almost on every modern PC.
  • No need to free up disk space to install a program.
  • Don’t have to worry about the programs currupting my Host OS like Windows.
  • Inexpensive or free most of the time.
  • Can be used on any computer running Windows, Linux, UNIX, and Mac.
  • Accessible on any PC with an internet connection.
  • Don’t have to worry about backing up my files on an external drive since it is already back up on my PC and on a remote server.
  • No need to maintain the program by emptying temporary files, and customizing settings for max performance.

What I dislike about Cloud Computing Programs?

  • If there is no internet connection on my PC, I can’t use any of my programs, or access my files online.
  • Afraid someone can hack my account and access my files.
  • Not as many fun games online compared to Windows.
  • If the website with the cloud program is down, I can’t use the program.
  • Using Cloud programs like streaming video players on slow connections takes a long time to load programs, or the video is always buffering or laggy.
  • Sometimes need to install a plugin or Activex, so I can use the cloud app.
  • Not as many tutorial, free help and support website compared to Windows or Linux.
  • Can’t run my favourite programs like Gimp,  Filezilla, Foobar 2000,etc.

Cloud Computing OS seems like the perfect OS for libraries, Coffee Shops and Internet Cafe where people mainly use the internet to search for things to read online.
