BitDefender Free Edition Version 10 – Great On-demand and Schedule virus scanner!

BitDefender Free Edition V10I been using the free version of BitDefender V10 for a few days, and it works great as a second opinion scanner. I can run it along side Microsoft Security Essentials. There is no active shield on the free version of BitDefender Free Edition Version 10 to interfere with Microsoft Security Essentials Free Antivirus which does have a active shield.

I like that BitDefender free has automatic updates and schedule scan which is good for a free program. There is a Deep, Full, Quick, Removable Drives, Memory, Rootkit, and My Documents scan. It uses the same ICSA Labs certified scan engine found in BitDefenders paid products.

The Auto definition update feature also does not bother me like some anti-virus which has pop-up windows which tells me its updating. BitDefender free just has a small text bubble on the system tray in Windows which tell me it is updating, so it does not bother me when I surf the internet, or watch videos.

BitDefender is best used as a second opinion antivirus, and for system recovery when your regular anti-virus fails at detecting and removing a virus which BitDefender Free can remove.

Scan BitDefender free edition

I like all the statistic which BitDefender Free shows me when I do a virus scan like the scan time, estimated time left, scan speed, boot sector, files, processes scanned, folders, archives, runtime packers, infected object, suspect objects, processes infected, warnings, disinfectected, deleted, moved, and identified viruses, last scan file, and a progress bar. I can see what is happening in real-time during a virus scan.

The Pause and stop virus scan is a useful feature in BitDefender Free Edition since if you need to use your computer for some CPU and RAM intensive tasks like video and photo editing, you can pause your virus scan, and click resume when you want to resume your scan again. The Stop scan feature is useful when there is a power outage and you are running off your UPS or Laptop’s battery and not the power outlets battery. You can stop your scan and safely shut down your computer.

BitDefender Free Edition is also a very fast virus scanner. It takes only 30 minutes to do a quick scan on my Windows 7 computer with a 1.8 GHz CPU and 1GB of memory. I can barely tell it is running in the background since it uses very little RAM and CPU resources.

BitDefender Free version works for Windows XP 32/64bit Service Pack 2 or higher, Windows Vista (32/64 bit) and Windows Vista SP1, and Windows Home Server.

The System Requirements are also very low all you need is a 800 MHz CPU 256MB of RAM for XP, 512MB for Vista, and 180 MB of free hard drive space.

BitDefender Free will remove viruses off your computer. You can also use your right click mouse menu to scan a specific file, folder or drive.

It is also very easy to use since Bit Defender automatically updates and scan your computer for viruses during installation of Bit Defender Free. You can also manually scan your computer by right clicking the system tray red bit defender icon on Windows System Tray. If viruses are detected, BitDefender will remove and quarantine virus infections from your computer’s hard drive. Bit Defender also can generate a report after a scan to show you if your computer is infected with a virus or rootkit.

The User interface is also very nicely designed for an antivirus program. since you just have to click tabs like general, antivirus and update, and read the documentation located on the right sidebar and middle area BitDefender programs. You can also click the “?” mark icon on the top right to launch the help file for additional help or information about BitDefender Free Edition.

BitDefender Free Edition V10

The Help file for BitDefender Free is also very easy to read and descriptive If you need help choosing which scan to perform, how to schedule a scan, how to manually update your virus definition, or other task, you just need to search and read the help file for help.

I hadn’t thought about using BitDefender alongside Security Essentials, good idea. I tend to throw MalwareBytes into the mix as well, as it makes a great tool as that final line of defence.

Indeed, BitDefender Free Version is great since it does not have an active-shield which may interfere with Security Essentials active shield. I scan with BitDefender on a weekly basis, and I also use the paid version of MalwareBytes for another security layer. ClamWin can also be good since it is also a free antivirus without an active shield to slow down your PC or conflict with your main Antiviruses active shield. Thanks for the comment, Peter.
