Older computers, laptops, devices and tablets may have problems connecting to a wireless router that newer devices can connect to because older devices may have incompatible wireless adapters, your router is on the wrong channel, the wi-fi adapter is broken, or your device may have a virus blocking it from connecting to the internet.

First, make sure you typed in the correct password to your device, to see if it is a wrong password which is preventing you to connect to your wireless internet.

Sometimes with older devices, you can’t connect to newer wireless router’s because your device uses WEP encryption, and may not be compatible with the newer WPA and WPA2 encryption standard if your wireless router is set to WPA instead of WEP, and it is password protected.

You can change your router’s encryption to WEP encryption, or buy a new wireless adapter which works with WPA2/WPA encryption for your laptop or desktop computer. You can also try changing your password to a simpler password for your wireless router to see if a complex password is stopping you from connecting to your wireless router.

You can also see if your device can connect to your wireless signal by turning off your password protection for your wireless router.

Sometimes there maybe spots in your house which does not get a wireless internet signal from your wireless router. It can be very simple to fix this problem by buying a more powerful wireless router, wireless USB adapter for your desktop or laptop, a wireless repeater/extender, and buying a better antenna for your wireless router.

If your wireless router is very old, and uses Wireless 802.11 B or G wireless, or your router is unreliable, upgrading your wireless router to a 802.11N or 802.11AC wireless router would be a good idea. 802.11N and AC routers are compatible with your older 802.11B/G devices like laptops, and desktops. But, you may need to use WEP encryption if you plan on password protecting your wireless signal which is a good idea to prevent hackers from hacking you.

D-Link DIR-655 Extreme-N Gigabit Wireless Router would be a great wireless router for your wireless needs like gaming, video and music streaming, YouTube,  game consoles, and web browsing.

D-Link says, the DIR-655 Extreme-N Gigabit Wireless Router has “up to 14x faster speed, and 6x farther range* than 802.11G wireless routers”

A 802.11AC wireless router like the ASUS ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit 802.11AC  Router has a maximum speed of 1300Mbps, and 50% wider coverage then 802.11 N. AC is also compatible with older 802.11G/B/G/N/A wireless devices. 802.11 AC routers is best if you must have the fastest connection to stream many HD video at once, or if you have very a fast internet connection like Fiber, T3, and Wideband internet.

Sometimes it may not be your wireless router’s problem, but it is your laptop or desktop which needs a better wireless adapter to increase it’s distance and speed. You can use an inexpensive USB wireless adapter like Medialink – Wireless N USB Adapter – 802.11n – 150Mbps – 2.4ghz to make your laptop’s wireless signal go farther to connect with your wireless signal from your router, and use the 802.11N signal which is faster then G, and B if your router also uses a 802.11N signal on your router. Sadly, with tablets, and eReaders, you usually can’t replace the wireless adapter unless you are using a Windows 7 or 8 Pro tablet with USB ports. The Amazon Kindle Fire HD has one of the best wireless N adapter which has dual band dual antenna wireless technology which is 40% faster then the iPad 3 wireless signal according to Amazon.com . Plus, the Amazon Kindle Fire HD is also hundreds of dollars cheaper then the iPad 3, so it is the best tablet for streaming media when it comes to speed because of its Dual Band Dual Antenna features.

Kindle Fire HD also has Multiple In/Multiple Out (MIMO) technology and its Wi-Fi is HD-ready for streaming HD video, and high bitrate sound. The Kindle Fire runs on Google Android 4.0 as its operating system, and there are plenty of apps which you can use to test, connect, and troubleshoot your Wi-Fi Signal, and it is also a great entertainment device for listening to music, watching movies, reading eBooks, and doing more tasks with.

Wireless signals from a wireless router sometimes disconnect at random times. But, there are a few things you can do to easily make it connect again without any special tools, or software in most cases. It can be as simple as unplugging, and re-plugging in your router’s power cord or adapter from the wall’s power outlet.

Simple tips for reconnecting your router’s wireless signal to the internet.

1. Make sure your router is not overheating, or very hot. If it is very hot, move your router to a table, or area where it has a lot of free space, so the surrounding air can cool it better. You can plug your router’s power adapter or cord into another outlet to see if it makes a difference, and make sure your router’s power adapter is in an open area, and power cords, walls, and stuff is not on top of it which may make it overheat.

2. Restart your wireless router. Restarting your router is very easy. You can unplug it from the wall power for 30 seconds, and re-plug it in after a few seconds. Some routers also have a on/off button or restart button on the router, so you can easily restart it by pressing a button. You can also log-in to your router with a web browser, and restart it from the router’s control panel in a web browser. You can read your router’s manual to learn how to restart your router from your computer or web browser. You can also use an Outlet 24-Hour Timer to set your Wireless router to automatically turn off, and on to restart it at a time when you are not using your internet to make it less likely, you need to manually restart your router. You will also save a power if you set your router to be off for many hours a day when you are sleeping.
